Mark leads Gray's new business development and marketing initiatives. Mark has been working in the education industry for nearly 10 years. Previously, he worked with College Athletic Departments, selling a software solution. He nurtured a successful organizational shift from the individual coach as customer, to an entire athletic department as the customer, which led to the successful sale of the company. With Gray, he is focused on building and developing client partnerships by working to define, communicate, and deliver solutions that create lasting value far beyond the scope of an individual project or subscription. Mark earned a Bachelor's degree from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business with a double major in Computer Information Systems and Management.

Picking the right programs to Start, Stop, Sustain or Grow requires a combination of data, judgment, and process.  In the fourth and final episode of our webcast series, we described a process that leads to high-quality program decisions and ensures that these choices have the support of faculty and institutional leaders.

In 2017, our team facilitated this process for colleges and universities that serve over 950,000 students.  The approach we described combines the best available data on markets for academic programs with a decision-making workshop.

2018 March GrayReports - Student and Employer Demand Trends

Every month, Gray releases the latest student and employer demand trends in higher education.  Here are a few of the trends from March of 2018 that we released in April of 2018:

  • The decline in total inquiries resumed: March inquiries fell 6%.
  • The downward trend was confirmed by an 11% decline in Google searches.
  • For the first time in five months, searches for online programs fell, dropping 12%.
  • After two years of increases, conversion rates also declined.

2018 February GrayReports - Student and Employer Demand Trends

Every month, Gray releases the latest student and employer demand trends in higher education.  Here are a few of the trends from February of 2018 that we released in March of 2018:

  • The overall inquiry volumes are flat.
  • August conversions dropped 8%.
  • Inquiries for online programs grew 4%.
  • On-ground continued a rapid decline. Inquiries for on-ground fell 7%, conversions dropped 21%.

2018 Webcast Series:  Best Practices in Program Portfolio Assessment - Employer Demand

The second episode of our webcast series on Best Practices in Program Portfolio Assessment focused on Employer Demand.  Our live webcast helped institutions assess employment markets for graduates of their programs.  We highlighted all of the data sources and the limitations of each source, so you can avoid their pitfalls and use them to effectively to guide program decisions.

For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is the best source for total employment in a given occupation.  However, 85% of BLS growth projections are off by 50% or more.  And 42% of BLS's growth projections are off by more than 100%.

Every month, Gray releases the latest student and employer demand trends in higher education.  Here are a few of the trends from January of 2018 that we released in February of 2018:

  • For the first time since 2012, inquiry volumes increased, rising 3%. 
  • Conversion rates and conversions are rising. 
  • Inquiries for online programs grew 14% YoY, up from 6% YoY growth last month.
  • Program Productivity is a serious issue–and an opportunity.

Gray kicked-off our 4-part webcast series on Best Practices in Program Portfolio Assessment on Thursday, February 8th, 2018.  We shared our approach, that was developed in partnership with institutional leaders, to reduce cost and increase revenue by identifying the best mix of programs.  Institutions have used our methodology to optimize how they allocate funds and invest in existing and new programs. 

Student demand was the focus of the first webcast in our series.  Our goal was to help you understand how to get and use Google data, inquiry volumes, Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) completions, and geo-spatial analysis to assess demand for your programs.

2017 December GrayReports - Student and Employer Demand Trends

Every month, Gray releases the latest student and employer demand trends in higher education.  Here are a few of the trends from December of 2017 that we released in January of 2018:

  • The 10% annual decline in student demand is slowing down a bit.
  • Online program growth slowed-almost to zero. 
  • Women are close to 60% of completions at both the Associate’s and Bachelor’s level.
  • 45% of undergraduate programs have 10 or fewer completions and produce just 7% of completions.
